LGBTQ+ Fostering in the UK: What You Need to Know

Let's be crystal clear: You can foster regardless of your sexual orientation or gender identity.

The UK fostering regulations explicitly prohibit discrimination. Whether you are Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, or Non-binary, the only thing that matters is your ability to provide a safe, loving home for a child.

A History of Inclusion

Since the Adoption and Children Act 2002, LGBTQ+ individuals and couples have had exactly the same legal rights to foster and adopt as heterosexual couples. In 2023, 1 in 12 adoptions in England were to same-sex couples. Fostering statistics are similarly robust.

Why LGBTQ+ Carers Are Needed

Many LGBTQ+ people have experienced feeling "different" or have had to navigate complex identity issues. This resilience and empathy can be a superpower when caring for a foster child who feels isolated or unsure of their place in the world.

Additionally, there are LGBTQ+ young people in care who specifically need carers who can support them in understanding their own identity.

Common Worries (Myths)

  • "Will agencies turn me away?" No. Most agencies actively recruit from the LGBTQ+ community (e.g. New Family Social members).
  • "Do I need to be married?" No. You can be single, married, or in a civil partnership.
  • "What about Transgender applicants?" You are welcome. The assessment focuses on your stability and capacity to care, not your gender history.
New Family Social

We recommend looking for agencies that are members of New Family Social, the UK charity for LGBTQ+ adopters and foster carers. They provide peer support and specific training.

The Assessment Process

The assessment is the same for everyone. It explores your past, your relationships, and your lifestyle. You might be asked how you would support a child who is being bullied, or how you would handle questions about your family structure. These are standard questions to ensure you can support a child confidently.
