How foster carer pay works

💷

Allowance

Every foster carer receives a weekly allowance to cover the cost of caring for a child — food, clothing, activities, and household costs.

Professional fee (IFA)

Independent agencies also pay a professional fee on top of the allowance — recognition of your skill and commitment. LAs rarely pay a fee.

🧾

Qualifying Care Relief

HMRC's special tax scheme means most foster carers pay zero income tax. You get £18,140 per year + £375–£450 per child per week, tax-free.

📈

Pay progression

As you complete more training and gain experience, you can move to higher pay bands. Some experienced carers earn £50,000+ per year.
